African Chieftain In Bother Over Typist
LONDON, Nov. 21. _ The Bamangwata tribe in the British African Protectorate of Bechuanaland has been thrown into dismay because their chief has married a typist in London. The chief, Scretse Khama, aged 27, went to Oxford as a law student He married Miss Ruth Williams in October and told his uncle about it afterwards. The uncle. Tshek Di, who was appointed Regent until his nephew finished his education, is reported to have been “grief stricken.” He immediately told his counsellors, who told Seretse to come home and explain. Seretse has now been explaining for a week at a tribal conference. Although some of the head men are willing to overlook the marriage, none of them will receive the wife. The High Commissioner in Bechuanaland. Sir Evelyn Baring, has flown to London to try to settle the matter by persuading Seretse’s wife not to go to Africa.
