FUNERAL RITES FOR A TREE
TOKYO, Nov. 21. Kyoto’s beautiful weeping cherry tree, Shidare Sakura, which tens of thousands of Japanese visit each blos-som-time, is dying. The three, 400 years old, is suffering either from old age or a disease which tree-doctors have failed to cure. At a mourning service, a stringed orchestra will play a funeral march and pilgrims will hang wreaths on the branches.
