; Devcited Service ! Visiting Salvation Army headquarters ', in Te Araroa during the week-end was Brigadier A. Battersby, who, upon ! reaching retirement age recently, could look back on an entire career spent in mission nursing in Africa and Ceylon. Brigadier Battersby intends to return to Africa after furlough to live her years of retirement with the native people among whom her active years «, have been spent. She was accompanied I on her Te Araroa visit by Major and Mrs. Elliot. Good Catches Exceptionally good catches have rewarded fishermen in the vicinity of Matakaoa Point. Four boats, operating independently, brought in an aggregate of over 200 fish, predominantly large schnapper, early in the week. Social at Tutua A very successful dance was held at Tutua Marae Hall on Friday evening, the object being to raise funds for the Tamakoro meeting house project. A good programme of vocal and other items entertained a large attendance. The M.C. was Mr. F. Pareohe and music was supplied by Mrs. B. Te Ngahue, with extras by Miss Hine Apanui. Items were contributed by the Tamakoro haka team, led by Mrs. P. Pene and Mr. J. Akuhata. Vocal duets were rendered by the Kiwara brothers, Mrs. Pene and Mr. J. Akuhata, and the Hira sisters, solos by Messrs. J. Abraham and B. Hira and humorous items by K. Kilson and M. Kiwara, and Mr. W. Clarke. Community singing followed the stage presentation. The hall was tastefully decorated and an excellent supper was provided by local ladies. Salvation Army Band on Tour A comprehensive tour, which included Tokomaru Bay, Waima and Te Puia, was undertaken by the Te Araroa band unit with-the Salvation Army last week-end. The band, under the direction of Senior Major Robert Prowse, rendered carol services at each of the centres visited. Te Araroa Card Evening A successful card evening, one of a series arranged for the purpose of raising funds for the reconstruction of the memorial tennis courts at Te Araroa, was held in Piongomaitapui Hall dur- | ing the week. There was an encouragingly large attendance and supper was provided by local ladies. j ! The ladies' prize was won by Mrs. Andrews, the gentleman's award going to Mr. T. Korau. The winning table was that of Messrs. B. Andrews, Kepa , Priestly, J. Paerohe and Ngaro Pene. | i i

j Teachers Farewelled I An end-of-the-year picnic at Hicks Bay was the form taken by a farewell tendered by members of the staff of the Rangitukia Maori School to Mr. J. ! Richmond, who is about to relinquish his assistantship at Rangitukia. Mr. Richmond is to go to the South Island in the new year. The headmaster of Te Araroa District High School at the annual school fantendered a farewell to Mrs. Polly Hovell, who has been on the primary staff for the past four years. Mrs. Hovell has been promoted to the position of infant mistress at Whakaangiangi Maori School. Personal Mr. R. A. Keeling and Miss Smith, child welfare officers, Gisborne, visited Te Araroa on Wednesday and Thursday. Miss Helen Hovell, Teachers' Training College, Wellington, is on vacation at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. S. Hovell, Te Araroa. Mr. W. Anaru, of the Welfare Division, Department of Maori Affairs, visited Te Araroa during the week. Mrs. E. M. Palmer, Tikitiki. who recently returned from sick-leave spent in the South Island, visited Te Araroa at the end of the week. Mr. and Mrs. W. L. S. Britton visited Horoera and Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Taylor visited East Cape' during the weekend.
