Diplomat Gaoled For Currency Smuggling
LONDON, Dec. 12,
On charges of violating currency regulations, Cesar Rubiroza, the 41-year-old secretary of the Dominican Legation in Berne, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and fined £50,000 by an Athens court.
It was alleged that Rubiroza was the ringleader of an international smugglers' gang. Rubiroza’s secretary, a Swiss. Mademoiselle Yvonne Neuri, received three months’ imprisonment and a fine of £17,500. Customs officers arrested them on December 8 as they wore boarding a United States aircraft bound for Cairo. The officers found in their luggage 37,000 dollars and £25,000 with currency from Malta. Palestine. Australia, Africa, Rhodesia, Egypt and Cyprus. It was alleged that Rubiroza and his secretary made 20 trips between Athens and Egypt in the last three months, bringing gold coins to Athens and taking out foreign exchange under the cover of diplomatic immunity.
