TWO CUPS WON IN FIRST CARNIVAL OF THE SEASON
An assembly of several hundreds of spectators encouraging goodsized fields in a lengthy programme of swimming and diving evenis lent an atmosphere reminiscent of gatherings of the pre-war period when the season’s first carnival of the Gisborne Amateur Swimming Club was held at the Macrae Baths last evening.
Competition was keen in the majority of the events and the form generally afforded a promising indication for performances by district contenders in the centre championships to be held in Gisborne during February.
Two of last evenings events decided possession for the season of trophies open to annual competition, Miss A. Shields annexing the McKinley Cup from scratch in the women’s 100 yards and R. Harris, off 20secs, winning the President’s Cup in the men’s 150yds.
Another event holding spectacular interest was the 100yds. relay for the club stars, won by H. Holmes' team from scratch.
Keeping to the back-stroke in which she specialises, the intermediate girl, Miss P. Morrison, won the. 100yds. freestyle event for the division. Result? follow.
