U.S. Aid To China Will Cease If Reds Take Country
(11 a.m.) SHANGHAI, Dec. 13. All United States aid to China would be stopped if the Communists took over control of the country, said Mr. Paul G. Hoffman, the Economic Co-operation Administrator.
He added that the United _ States Government would _be willing to accept a recommendation made by the E.C.A. to continue economic aid if the present regime was replaced by a true coalition representing the Chinese people. Mr. Hoffman, who was giving a press conference, did not exclude the Communists from a coalition, but added: “If the coalition obviously were com-
pletely communistic, the chances are that the United States Government would not favour continuing relief. "Our present task is to make the best possible use of dollars remaining under the current aid programme and to ensure that proposals for any future programme we may present to Congress will be as sound and as well considered as possible." Mr. Hoffman will igo to Nanking tomorrow to confer with General Chiang Kai-shek before returning to the United States.
