TRAVELLING ROUND Miss Dawn Robinson, Stanley road, was the week-end guest o£ Mrs. 11. T. Lofller, Pouawa. Miss Ruth Nathan, returned home to Palmerston North, yesterday.

Miss D. Fitzgerald, Rcre, was a week end visitor to Gisborne.

Miss Betty Williams, Rawiri street, was the guest of Miss Jill Smith, “Toanga” Bushmere, at the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. W. 11. Bradley, Grey street, have returned home after a holiday in Fcilding and Hawke's Bay. Miss J. Scott, Cook Hospital, returned to Gisborne last Friday after staying with her sister, Mrs. W. 11. Clemcntson, Mastcrton. Mrs. G. S. Bridge. Puha, returns home today after visiting Hawke's Bay. Mrs. R. D. Dymoek, Hautapu, Puha, returned home last week after staying at Lake Rotoiti.

Mrs. Selwyn Averill, Darwin road, returns today after spending a few days in Hawke’s Bay. Miss Sheila McDonald, Kanakanaia, was the week-end guest of Mrs. H. G. Wellborne, Kelvin road, Kaiti. Miss Mary Bnillie, Hiwiroa, Waimata Valley, is paying a visit to Hawke's Bay.

Mr. and Mrs. Logan Bruce, who have been staying with Mrs. F. O. Bruce, Whangara, left last Saturday for the Wairarapa. Mr. T. G. Seymour, Adelaide, South Australia, is at present paying a visit to Gisborne.

Mr. and Mrs. B. G. Seeley. Domett street, left on Monday for Hawera for the school holidays. Mrs. M. J. Brownlie, Ballance street, returns home today after a short visit to Hawke’s Bay.

Mr. and Mrs. I. L. Thomas, Ruatoria, have been paying a visit to Gisborne. Mr. and Mrs. B. G. Kemp, Pouriwai, Rere, returned home last Tuesday after a short visit to Palmerston North. Mrs. C. Oliver, returned to Gisborne last Thursday after visiting Auckland.

Mrs. G. I. Parker, Rawiri street, Kaiti, returned home yesterday after being the guest of Firs. E. Loisel, Tolaga Bay. Miss M. Musgrave, Beach road, has returned home after paying a short visit to Hawke’s Bay. Mrs. T. Birchnall, Harris street, has returned home after a holiday in New Plymouth and Wellington. Mrs. P. M. Roberts, with her baby daughter flew from Perth to Sydney last" week, with stops at Adelaide and Melbourne. Leaving Sydney by Skymaster she reached Auckland last Wednesday and arrived in Gisborne yesterday, where she is staying with lie: parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Moncktom Aberdeen road. Mrs. Roberts will be here until March, until which time her husband has been temporarily transferred to Sydney. A New Zealand woman author, Mrs. Hazel Walsh, Putaruru, has had a mystery novel, “The Fourth Point of the Star,” published in Los Angeles. Mrs. Walsh and her daughter, Miss Leslie Walsh, have been absent from New Zealand since April, 1947, travelling in the United States. Mrs. Walsh returned to New Zealand by the Aorangi this week. Miss Walsh has taken a position as a teacher at a school at Williams Lake, British Columbia. - Mrs. Walsh, who was a member of the nursing profession, bases her novel on a nursing home in New Zealand. The novel has enjoyed quick success in America . Two members of the women’s branch of the New South Wales police force are at present visiting Christchurch under an exchange system organised by the Australian and New Zealand Governments. They are Sergeant Irene Rea and Constable Thora Michael, both from Sydney. Both consider the work of New Zealand policewoman is as efficient as that of women members of the force in New South Wales. Two New Zeaand policewomen, Constables R. Dudfield and Flora McDonald, are in Sydney at present under the exchange system. LODGE SOCIAL

A very large attendance of members at the fortnightly meeting of the Gisborne Rebekah Lodge last Thursday was presided over by the Noble Grand Sister R. Hollis. A vote of condolence to bereaved members was honoured. Business was reduced to a minimum. The picnic committee reported on arrangements for the lodge picnic in January. One candidate was proposed for membership. Elections for the offices of District Deputy Grand Master and Grand Lodge representative were conducted.

On conclusion of lodge, the final social of the year was held, the hall being crowded by members and friends. Christmas motifs were a feature of the decorative scheme. A highlight of the evening was the presentation of veterans’ jewels (for 15 years service), to five members; Sisters E. M. Barradell, A. Foster, N. Hall, D. Cornelius and R Robinson, past Noble Grands, the presentation being carried out by the Grand Lodge representative, Mr. B. H. Wilcox and the District Deputy Grand Master, Mr. P. J. Rohan, who eulogised the services of these members before pinning on the jewels. The recipients were accorded musical honours and Sister E. M. Barradell spoke in reply. During intervals in the dance programme, with music by Mr. H. Lennane, items by Miss B. Powel, a sketch, “Father Christmas,” by the social committee, and carpi singing were enjoyedThe Monte Carlo was won by Mrs. G. Nalder and partner. Supper was served and a most successful evening closed at a late hour with Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem.

COCKTAILS AL FRESCO As a prelude to the Young Farmer’s Club dance at Manutuke on Saturday night, Miss Jill Smith invited about 80 of her friends to an outdoor cocktail party, held on the lawn of her home, "Toanga,” Bushmcre. Gay, coloured lights and floral arrangements of dark red leaves and red .roses outside, and effective hydrangeas indoors added to the charm of the surroundings. Miss Smith wore an allover floral chintz frock for the function. KINDERGARTEN BREAK-UP

Twenty-six pupils at Miss I. R. Hunt's kindergarten school yesterday morning sang and danced at their break-up for the year, which was attended by their parents.

Songs, a little acted playettc, some percussion items and action songs provided an interesting example of the children's activities during the year. Each child received a small gift from one of their number representing “Father Christmas” at the conclusion of the programme. REGISTERED NURSES

The annual dinner of the Gisborne branch of the New Zealand Registered Nurses’ Association was held recently at the Bon Accord and was followed by the annual meeting and a social evening.

Miss R. Bunt, president, welcomed the guests who included Misses Sayer and Olsen, president and secretary of the Cook Hospital Student Nurses’ Association and Miss Parker, past-presi-dent of the association. The toast list commenced with a toast to the King. Miss Bunt proposed a toast to the Student Nurses’ Association, this being acknowledged by Miss Sayer and Mrs. Butler proposed a toast to the N.Z. Registered Nurses’ Association, a reply being given by Miss J. I Martin. The annual report was presented by Miss Bunt and Miss Preston, treasurer, submitted the balance sheet. The following officers were elected for 1949:—President, Miss R. Bunt; vice-presidents, Mrs. Crawford-Smith, Miss R. Preston; secretary, Miss K. I. Craig; treasurer, Mrs. J. Smellie; council, Mrs. G. Butler, Misses M. Bagley, C. E. Blackwood. D. Giles, M. Gillingham, W. Johnston, J. I. Martin and E, Newing. During the social hour, Mrs. B, Ogilvy sang “Robin Adair,” and members of Cook Hospital staff read an amusing play, “The New Poor” by Gertrude Jennings. Miss Hopkins concluded the programme by singing a bracket of songs.
