P.B. DEFEAT H.B. BY THREE WICKETS IN FAST FINISH

Scoring 299 runs with the loss of seven wickets, Poverty Bay won tho Hawke Cup elimination challenge cricket match from Hawke’s Bay by three wickets yesterday. Poverty Bay also wins the Kirk Cup for the season. The end of the three-day match on the Gisborne Oval was characterised by a fast-scoring partnership of R. Barbour and P. 11. Dow.

Both of these players were still at the crease at the conclusion of play at 2.10 p.m., Barbour being 75 not out and Dow 41 not out. Poverty Bay's second innings score was 299 for seven wickets.

Barbour, in scoring his 75. let no opportunities escape and hit the Hawke's Bay bowling to all parts of the field. His innings included seven fours. He and Dow coming in as eighth and ninth men when the score stood at 172 and Poverty Bay required 127 runs to win wasted little time. In the two overs immediately after lunch they added 20 runs, while in the 55 minutes after the luncheon interval to the end of the match they added 97 runs. Fast and slow bowlers did not seem to worry either man.

Requiring 196 runs for a win and with two wickets down in the second innings, the prospects did not appear bright for Poverty Bay at the resumption of play yesterday. After scoring three runs Martin was caught with his score at 58. The four batsmen who followed him went in fairly short order, Sharp and Blane with 26 and 22 runs respectively contributing the best knock. T. P. L. Reaney with two wickets for 61 runs and A Jensen with two for 93 were the most prominent of the Hawke's Bay bowlers yesterday. The other three wickets were captured by J. Henderson, H. E. Reaney and A. Dean.
