CENTURY AND HAT TRICK RECORDED IN POVERTY BAY SECOND GRADE PLAY

Bright play with a number of the elevens showing improved form marked the opening on Saturday of the third series of two-day games in the Senior B competition of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association and tlie fifth of the one-day matches of the Second Grade. The Senior A competition was suspended owing to the engagement of the representatives with Hawke's Bay.

Top score of the season among batsmen of the Second Grade competition was achieved by the Marist player, B. Scholium, with a fine stand for 116 runs. His century, the first to be registered in the division, included 10 boundaries, two being sixes. After passing 100 runs he added two fours. Another feature of the Second Grade series was the hat trick performed by the Wanderers (A) bowler, T. Knox, against United. The iiat trick was tiie fourth recorded in the division this season.

Seven Wickets for One Run

Another impressive display with the ball was given by the United bowler in the Second Grade, L. Duncan, who took seven Wanderers (A) wickets for one run in the first innings and four for 26 in the second, thus playing an important part in the first defeat suffered by the grade leaders. Duncan is the

bowler who in the second series of matches took 16 wickets for 19 runs.

The High School iB) eleven in the

Second Grade achieved their first win of the season and collected 10 points at the expense of Rugby Old Boys <B), while High School (A) in the same division recorded their first 10-point victory, the losers being Wanderers (B). Best Score by High School

Playing Marist in the Senior B competition, the High School team registered 95 runs with four wickets still in hand, the top tally of the side for the season. The Marist players, who had opened with 87, also registered their best score. H. 5.0.8. also made their highest tally in the Senior B contest with a start of 215 against Rugby Old Boys (A), the leaders, who replied strongly and had 182 runs on the board for eight wickets when stumps were drawn for the day. No play took place between United and Rugby Old Boys (B), who were also drawn to meet in the Senior B competition. They arc to play a oneday match this week.
