Father Loses Life In Vain Bid To Save Son From Fire
(11 a.m.) BRISBANE, Dec. 13. In a vain attempt to rescue his three-year-old son from a fire at his home, a former war pilot, Edwin Charles Ham, aged 28, sustained burns from which he subsequently died. He was awakened to find the rear part of the house on fire, and immediately dashed into the flames. He suffered extensive burns from which, though given seven blood transfusions, he died six hours later.
His son’s body was later found in the ruins of the home. Mr. Ham was mentioned in dispatches for saving the lives of the crew when he was forced to ditch his crippled Catalina during the troops’ landing in Borneo. As commander of another Catalina, he rescued a Beaufighter crew from the sea north of the Halmaheras.
