P.B. FACE FIGHT FOR RUNS IN REPLY TO H.B.

At noon today, the third and last day of the Hawke Cup challenge elimination cricket match between Hawke’s Hay and Poverty Bay, be ing played on the Gisborne Oval, the home players, with five wickets in hand. required 130 runs to bring them level with the 412 runs scored by the visitors in their two innings.

Fine weather and a batsman's wicket has favoured the match throughout. When stumps were drawn at the end of the first day’s play on Saturday, Hawke's Bay had completed their first innings for 154 runs, while Poverty Bay had been dismissed in fairly short order for 114 runs—a deficit of 40. In their second knock yesterday, the visitors took few risks and were able to compile 258 runs before the last man was dismissed, Poverty Bay thus facing the task of getting 299 in the second strike to win the match. T. P. L. Reane.v's 108 had been the highlight of the match so far. Poverty Bay began their second Innnings shortly after 3 p.m. and when stumps were drawn at 6 p.m. had 103 on the board. S. B. Martin, who was playing a particularly careful knock, had contributed 55 of these runs and was still batting. At noon today the Poverty Bay score in the second innings was 167 runs for five wickets.

The first two Hawke’s Bay batsmen, K. Perrin and H. E. Reaney opened confidently, the latter scoring freely for a time. However, when the latter’s score stood at 20 he hit the bottom of his bat on the ground as he was plaving a straight ball. The ball flew back to the bowler, J. P. Blane, who had an easy catch. Good Fielding by Conole

J. Stevenson, who then joined Perrin at £he wicket, did not last long, being brilliantly caught by R. F. Conole at short leg, before he had opened his scoring. Conole was also responsible for dismissing Perrin, who, with his score at five, endeavoured to obtain a quick single. The ball was gathered in at short leg by Conole, who threw down the stumps.

The same fieldsman was almost responsible for dismissing T. P. L. Reaney, who before he had settled down properly at the crease gave a hard chance at point. Conole dived, but as he grasped it, the ball touched the ground. The fourth and fifth batsmen, T. P. L. Reaney and J- Harte were- the only ones in the Hawke’s Bay side to put up comparatively high figures. Following his early escape. Reaney settled down and had 44 on the board before being bowled by Blane. His partner, Harte, also did well and was unfortunate in going l.b.w. to Blane. The rest of the field tailed off and were dismissed in fairly short order, F. Northe being the only man to reach double figures. J. Blane who took six wickets for 55 runs was the most successful of the P-B. Bowlers. R. Barbour and T. M. Sharp were responsible for the other two wickets which fe l ! to bowlers.

T. M. Sharp with 25, which included three boundaries was the top scorer for Poverty Bay in the first innings. He was bowled by T. P. Reaney who also took two other wickets during the innings. H. E Tapping, 24 not out, was the only other Gisborne batsman to knock up over 20 runs. The only other batsmen in the home side to reach double figures were S. B. Martin and R. Barbour.

T. Reaney Scores 108 Runs

J. Henderson and T. P. L. Reaney, who between them took six of the Poverty Bay wickets were the most successful bowlers. A. Jensen and W. Willis each took two wickets.

The majority of the Hawke’s Bay batsmen appeared to "get their eye in” in the side's second innings, T. P. L. Reaney’s 108 runs being the main feature of the 258 scored. Reaney was confident throughout and scored freely to all parts of the wicket. His 108 included one six and 16 fours. He was at the crease for 160 minutes and took few risks.

11. E Reaney, the opening batsmen, was the next highest scorer with 44 runs, being caught by J. Barbour off Blane. A Deane. F. Northe, W. Willis and J. Stevenson were the other batsmen to make double figures. Fraser carried a large part of the bowling for Poverty Bay and although T. Reaney scored fairly freely off him at times, he was successful in dismissing five of the visitors for 55 runs, R. Barbour, J. P Blane, H. E. Tapping and S. E. Martin, each with one wicket, were the other successful bowlers.
