POPULAR VOTE IN U.S. PRESIDENCY

(10 a.m.) WASHINGTON. Dec. 10 The total popular vote in the U.S. Presidential election was 48,680,009, it was announced last night. The voting was: President Truman (Democrat) 24,104,548, 49.5 per cent. Governor Dewey (Republican) 21,969,625, 45.1 per cent. Governor Thurmond (“Dixiecrats”) 1,169,312. Henry Wallace (Progressive) 1,156,856. Norman Thomas (Socialist) 132,138. Claude Watson (Vegetarian 103,343. Edward Teichert (Socialist Labour) 2.7,921. Farrell Dobbs (Socialist Workers) 13.007. The smaller parties polled the remainder. These figures are official except for Connecticut State which however, is included. President Truman led Governoi Dewey by 2,134.923 but failed to poll an overall majority.
