LAMBING FIGURES SECOND HIGHEST ON RECORD

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 10. In a statement yesterday, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. E. L. Cullen, gave information regarding the estimated lambing for the current year based on particulars supplied by inspectors of stock. The figures for the Dominion and for North and South Islands were given, together with estimates for the previous five years and the actual numbers of lambs tailed for the years 1943 to 1946. North Island. 1943—Number of breeding ewes. i1.321.59G: estimated lamb percentage, 89.43; estimated number of lambs, 10,572.444: actual number tailed. —. 1947.—11.096.313; 92.47; 10,814.554: not

The number of breeding ewes for 1946 is the figure as at 1945. The number of breeding ewes shown for 1943 is the figure as at 1941. The estimated lambing percentage of 92.72 per cent, can be regarded as verv satisfactory.

.The figure represents the second highest percentage recorded, the highest being in 1947. The figures, for certain areas of the North Island indicate a lower percentage than last year, due mainly to the dry autumn experienced. The drop in the Ncth Island was, however, more than offset by the particularly good lambing percentage in the South Island.
