ITALY DRAWING CLOSER TO WESTERN EUROPE
(10 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 6.
The course of last week’s Italian Assembly debate leaves no doubt that Italian political opinion is moving strongly towards closer ties with Western Europe and with various projects—political, military and economic —associated with the Western Union, says The Times in an editorial. The clear defeat of the motion favouring “neutrality” is important because it is less than two months since Count Sforza brought the question of Italy's relations with the Western Union to the foreground of discussion and provoked opposition which was not at first confined to the Marxist parties. Now, however, many projects for advancing Western unity’s cause are being mooted in Rome.
The notion for federal union appears to have received the wannest Italian backing and preliminary talks on a customs union with France will probably conclude early in the New Year. These Italian overtures towards ending the isolation of defeat are the logical sequel to fascism's overthrow.
