FAST DRIFT TESTS SURFERS IN WAIKANAE RACE OF 1000 YDS.
Though conditions were fairly calm off Waikanae Beach for the week-end race of the surf section of the Gisborne Swimming Club for the De Costa Cup, choppy seas with a fast westerly drift tested competitors in the open event held later in the day.
The 11 starters completed the 600yds. course in the first race, but in the open event of 1000yds. two of the nine starters drifed considerably and came ashore at points which left them out of the contest. B. McLean, one of the scratch competitors, won both events. Details follow.
