“Oh, My Darling”
“Although discipline is first-class, the men do not always call their officers ‘Sir,’ but use expressions like ‘Oh, my Brother,’ instead. Another form of address commonly used is ‘Yahabebi,’ which means ‘Oh, my Darling,’ and I was convulsed one day to hear a sergeant-major go up to a recruit and say: ‘Oh, my Darling, your buttons are very dirty this morning.’ ’* —Colonel Palmer, broadcasting in the 8.8.C.’s “Radio Newsreel” on the Bedouin of the Arab Legion.
