MAN SEVERELY BURNED -EXPLOSION ON SHIP

(P.A.)

AUCKLAND, Dec. 1

Burns to almost every part of his body were suffered by the second engineer of the Works Department ketch New Golden Hind, Mr. F. Dowling, Auckland, when escaping rock gas exploded in the vessel’s gallery while she was at Rarotonga about a month ago. The ketch has returned to Auckland, but Mr. Dowling is still in the Rarotonga Hospital. The accident occurred when a feed pipe burst while he was changing the cyclinder. The galley fire was alight and the resulting explosion and fire badly scorched him. He was wearing only shorts. Mr. Dowling is expected to return to New Zealand soon.
