GAMBLER FOUND DEAD AFTER LOSING £27,000

RENO (Nevada). Nov. 1. Leonard Wolff, wealthy socialite, lost £27.000 in gambling at a Reno night club. He was found dead later. Mrs. Gwyn Steinbeck, estranged wife of the novelist, John Steinbeck, will be called to give evidence at the inquest, as it is believed that she was the last person to see Wolff alive. She was with Wolff when he lost the money, but she says that she was “blacked out” during the session. Wolff was found dead about 45 minutes after he had escorted her home. The police think that he first tried to wreck his car and then shot himself. His father, a Denver investment counsellor, said that he believed it was suicide, but he could not understand what motive his son had. Schoolboy’s Feat An outstanding batting performance was given by a boy named Griffiths, from the Mangateretere School, in the primary schools’ cricket competition in Hastings on Saturday, his total reaching 180.
