IDLE JEST OUTSTAYED THE N.Z. OAKS FIELD

(Herald Special Service.) The Foxbridge filly Idle .Test outstayed the fillies in the 62nd N.Z. Oaks at Ricearton on Saturday when she won by four lengths from Flying Sovereign. She was trained by J. Shaw, who at one time was a trotting stipendiary steward, while her rider was R. W Shaw. This filly had 11 starts last season, but it was not until July that she won a race acid that a division of a maiden event at the Christchurch Hunt. This term she had won a minor hack race at a country meeting. In that race she met with interference in the middle stages and the manner in which she won suggested the possession of stamina and this she more than confirmed last Saturday Her dam, Aboyne, was got by Paper Money (a wonderfully successful sire of brood mares) from The Linnet (a moderate performer), by the stoutly-bred and successful sire Kilbroney from the imported Grey Linnet (dam of Songbird.) Flying Sovereign was fairly beaten by Idle Jest. The manner in which sho outclassed the opposition in the mile Desert Gold Stakes pointed to her be ing above the average, but although she was outstayed by the winner her feat was a creditable one. She is small and is not up to the task of carrying Bst. 101 b. for li miles. When she is carrying a stone or so less a good first-class handicap will not be beyond her staying powers. The Robin Goodfellow filly Golden Amber was a surprise favourite and to some extent justified her place backing by finishing third. The Hastings filly Hush, for one just graduated from maiden class, did well to finish fourth. Later this season, when backed by more racing condition, she may do even better.
