Hotel Workers’ Claims For Wages And Hours

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 30. Increases in pay and alterations to hours and working conditions were sought by the New Zealand Hotel, Restaurant and Related Trades Union in claims heard today before the Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. S. Ritchie. The union asked that a 40-hour week of five days or eight hours daily should not be exceeded without payment of overtime, that broken shifts should bo completed within 12 hours from starting to finishing time, and that when a worker is called upon to work on his days of! he should be paid a minimum of four hours overtime and receive an extra day off for each day on which he works.

The union also asked that two weeks’ holiday on full pay be allowed all employees on completion of 37 weeks' service.

The wage increases sought were approximately 10s for each employee permanently employed. Substantial increases in rates for casual labour are also asked for. The union asked that because, it was stated, of the growing tendency to appoint bar managers as distinct from head barmen, their position and wages be clarified and proposed that they receive £lO weekly. Tire employers opposed the union's claims and submitted as counter-pro-posals that, the terms and conditions of the present award continue. The hearing is proceeding.
