TIME AND STAKE RECORD HOLDERS IN FIELD FOR £7500 TROTTING CUR

43 ACCEPTORS FOR MELBOURNE CUP: BALLOT POSSIBLE

(Herald Special Service.)

Probably no other event in the history of the light-harness j sport in the Southern Hemisphere has created greater interest than 1 the contest to be held at Addington tomorrow for the N.Z. Trotting! Cup, of £7500. The high-class field includes two world record holders in Single Direct and Emulous, besides Highland Fling, who ! established a record last season as a stake-earner over 12 months, j

Single Direct when finishing third last year ran the two miles' in 4min. 11 2-ssec., the fastest time ever recorded in a trotting race. Emulous, when he won the final of the inter-Dominion championship at Alexander Park last February, paced the two miles in 4min. 12 2-ssec., the fastest time ever established in winning over that distance.

*N.Z. CUP HANDICAP Highland Fling; won the New Zealand Cup in brilliant fashion from 12 yds. last year and also at other times gave great performances. At the Inter Dominion Championship, he won the mile and a half, but did not perform up to expectations in the two other heats at Alexander Park. It was at that time that Emulous was given the palm over the U. Scott horse. However, later in the season Highland Fling beat Emulous on more than one occasion. Highland Fling has been handicapped on the 60 yards behind mark for tomorrow's race. In the history of the race the great gelding, Harold Logan, has been the only one to triumph from that mark. Ilis time off 12yds. last year was 4.18 2-5. If the front rankers make the pace solid from the start tomorrow Highland Fling will have to put up a fresh world time to win. Emulous is a great trotter as he has displayed on several occasions. He receives 12 yards from Highland Fling. Back to the form he showed last February at the championship meeting his admirers would expect him to beat the back marker. Just after the championships he went off, as at Addington Highland Fling twice beat him and at the Dunedin Centennial meeting the U. Scott horse gave Emulous 12 yards and beat him. Knave of Diamonds, second in last year’s cup goes off to 24 yards. He will have solid support. Last year he started oIT the same mark as Highland Fling, but now receives 36 yards from last season’s winner. In the first heat of the second qualifying round of the inter-Dominion championship meeting in February Knave of Diamonds beat Emulous over the mile and a half. Both were off 36 yards. Later last season Knave of Diamonds won a mile and a qualcr free-for-all in the south and among those behind him were the

two back markers, Emulous and Highland Fling. Single Direct, the six-year-old gelding, who starts off 12 yards, is a true stayer. If one or more of the frontmarkers make the pace a sizzler from the start they will suit this candidate. Plunder Bar, Aberhall, Sprayman, Dundee Sandy and Loyal Peter make a quintette of front markers that performed creditably last season. Aberhall commenced last season in a very promising manner and his trainerdriver was greatly impressed with his prospects of winning the New Zealand Cup. Sprayman was second to Single Direct in the last Auckland Cup. Reports from the other island says Dundee Sandy is reported to be a better horse this season that previously. He is an honest, staying pacer. Nyallo Scott, the leading stake earner of the 1946-47 season, has not raced nearly as well since. Navigate was the surprise winner at Oamaru on Labour Day when Highland Fling and Emulous were among the also started. Countless and the 1947 Auckland Cup winner Loyal Nurse might be favoured if the going is soft. REMAINING EVENTS Other races on the programme are also interesting. The field for the mile and-a-quarter unhobbled trotter’s event includes some of the best square-gaited horses in the Southern Hemisphere, including last year’s best, Ariel Scott, the brilliant Fantom and half a dozen others all capable of winning this £1250 event. The Riccarton Stakes field, three-year-olds that have not won a race, contains some very promising young material and they include place form. The other five events have attracted perhaps the best in their respective classes.

(10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 29. Forty-three horses have accepted for the Melbourne Cup. If insufficient sera tellings are received before 8 p.m. on Saturday, a ballot will be conducted to reduce the field to the safety limit of 35. The acceptances are;— Melbourne Cup, of £12.500; 2 miles.
