JAP. FORCE IN HIDING FOR THREE YEARS OFFERS TO SURRENDER
(10.15 a.m.) SHANGHAI, August 31. The Chinese authorities in Nanking and Mukden are considering means for the disposal of a Japanese force of 10,000 strong which has offered (o surrender to Nationalist forces after hiding for the past three years in the Changpai Mountains, in Eastern Manchuria.
According to the Central Daily News the majority of the men are said to be former members of Japan’s Kwantung Army, although there is also a sprinkling of former Manchurian troops. The desire to surrender is reported to be due to a Communist threat to their mountain hideout. The entire force is stated to be well equipped and also has large supplies of food.
