WARSHIPS AND PLANES BOLT FROM HURRICANE
NEW YORK, Aug. 30. The battleship Missouri and the aircraft-carriers Mindoro and Sicily, two cruisers and hundreds of military and navy planes fled tonight before a powerful hurricane which is expected to smash against the North Carolina coast wi,th winds of 115 miles an hour about midnight. The Atlantic Fleet headquarters at Norfolk, Virginia, ordered 47 naval ships to sea to ride out the hurricane.
The Navy Headquarters at Washington has issued to bases on the South and Central Atlantic coast areas a Condition I alert, requiring the immediate evacuation of all navy planes. A Condition II alert was issued to northern bases, requiring the evacuation of all but essential planes.
