50-TON BOULDER DAMAGES ROAD IN MANAWATU GORGE

(P.A.) PALMERSTON N„ Aug. 30. After a week and a day of gradual movement the 50-ton boulder which threatened motorists in the Manawatu Gorge crashed on to the road at 11.50 a.m. on Saturday. The huge rock smashed through the concrete decking of the road, forming a crater 17 feet long by 11 feet broad. It took with it a slip which blocked the road for several hours-

Working through the afternoon a Public Works Department gang cleared the road for one-way traffic by 6 p.m., but the passage remained hazardous throughout yesterday, a narrow part of the roadway being usable between the crater and a steep drop to the river. Special warnings were issued to motorists to take more care, as several casual drivers raised fears of a major accident. The boulder, which had been perchad 80 feet above the roadway, bounced twice off the hillside before smashing its way through the road 1o the river.
