Governor’s Swimming Prowess.
Reading of his Excellency the Gover-nor-General’s landing by outrigger canoe through the surf, on his Pacific islands tour, “Atticus" of the Sunday Times recalled that he has always enjoyed “travelling dangerously, and especially travelling dangerously through water,” and referred to his Channel attempts and the Gallipoli exploit that won Sir. Bernard Freyberg his first D. S. O. “Atticus” continued: “What is less well known, I think, is the eagerness with which he badgered General Montgomery, his Army commander in Italy, to let him swim the Sangro. The river had flooded, the bridge had carried away, and our bridgehead was cut off. Somehow, all of us there knew how the New Zealanders, divisional commander was ‘on at’ the Army commander to let him swim across, and how hard put to it Montgomery was to clear that he forbade it absolutely.” _
