Horse Killed & Jockeys Injured By Moonee Valley Smash
(N Z.P.A.—Renter—Copyright.) ' MELBOURNE, Aug. 30. One of the worst race smashes in years occurred at Moonee Valley when five runners fell in the first division of the Morang Handicap. The jockey, E. Preston, broke his left leg and was rushed to hospital. A. Breasley, who injured his back, was not permitted to ride again that day. The promising West Australian filly Barlowerie died instantly of a broken neck.
The crash occurred at the spot where Keith Voitre was killed in September, 1938. Preston's mount. Star of the East, fell first and the whole field appeared to crash into her. In a moment the course was strewn with fallen horses and riders. The favourite. Trellis, who was making a forward move at the time, was among the casulaties.
The placings went to three outsiders, Lady Luba. Jenny Tressady and Mount Beauty.
