Civil Service Stands Firm On Appeal Rights Oh Promotions

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 28. Determination to resist all attempts at interference with the appeal rights of public servants, was expressed by delegates to the Public Service Association conference, said a statement from the conference last night. Referring to the proposals of the Public Service Commission to limit appeal rights in the case of senior appointments, it pointed out that once higher positions in the service were subject to political control it would be impossible for all other grades to escape the consequences. The following resolution was adopted: “This executive council of the Public Service Association places on record the gratitude which is felt by all public servants for the prompt and determined action of the executive in opposing and so far preventing the attempted interference with their appeal rights" The conference decided to ask that all tradesmen promoted above the basic grade receive a salary scale and grading equivalent to those in the clerical division. Also it was decided that “as Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall on Saturdays the commission be asked to grant holidays on five ordinary working days between Christmas and New Year.
