WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

TAMARAU The Tamarau Women’s Institute celebrated its eleventh birthday at the July meeting, held in St. Paul's Hall, Kaiti. The guests of the afternoon were members of the P.B. federation, and the Ngatapa institute, also Mesdames McCliskie, Dixon and Poswillo.

The annual prizes were presented, the winners being:—Garden circle: Mrs. Mogford, Moore Cup; Mrs. T. Campbell, runner-up. Mixed competitions, (yearly points): Mrs. Clements, 1; Mrs. Rhodes 2; Mrs. T. Campbell 3 ;Mrs. Mogford 4. Drama, (yearly points): Mrs, Hall 1; Mrs. Grey 2; Mrs. Howe 3. Mesdames Howo and Clare equal. Sprays were presented to Mesdames McCliskie, E. M. Monckton, Hall, Wallen, Brown, and the secretary of the Ngatapa institute. The birthday cake had been made and beautifully iced by Mrs. Thornley Campbell. The winners of the amusements were Mesdames Cox, Wallen, Warner and Poswillo.

Items were given by Misses E. Hill and G. Smith, Mesdames Wood and Hill. A dialogue was presented by Mesdames Grey and Hall. The results of the monthly competitions were:— Plate of cakes: Mrs. Wright, 1; Mrs. Rhodes 2; Mrs. P. Campbell, 3. Thanks for a most enjoyable afternoon were given by Mrs. Monckton on behalf of the visitors. PATUTAIH

Mrs. A. Stevens presided at the July meeting,, which was held in the Patutahi Hall. An invitation to members to attend the Manutuke birthday meeting was accepted. A report on the Masquerade Ball held recently, was given, the president warmly thanking all members who had so willingly helped.

A letter from overseas was read, thanking the institute for food parcels received. The mystery parcel was won by Mrs. Johnstone. Competitions resulted: —Jam tart (dripping pastry): Mrs. J. W. Atkins, 1; Mrs. Jones, 2; Mrs. Stevens , 3. Adult’s knitted cardigan: Mrs. J. R. Atkins, 1; Mrs. J. Thodey, 2; Mrs. J. ! Brodic, 3. Bloom: Mrs. Stevens, 1; j Mrs. D. Peach, 2; Mrs. G. H. Ballard, 3. The next meeting was set down for August 11. ORMOND The monthly meeting was held in the Ormond institute room on July 14 when a new member was welcomed. Members passed a vote of condolence with Mrs. Jackson. Mrs. Grayson read the Dominion president’s address “In Home and Country.” A story of Gisborne’s early history was read, telling how the town received its name. MATAKAQA The July meeting of tire Matakaoa ! institute was held in the Gaiety Theatre, Mrs. A. C. Wood presiding. The roll call, “A humorous story,” was popular and amusing. Members ' brought tinned food to be sent to Britain. A letter from CORSO was read, . thanking the members for donations of j warm clothing. I Mrs. Hindmarsh gave an interesting talk on rose culture. Competitions resulted:—Tumbler of flowers: Mrs. Taylor, 1; Mrs. Rudland, 2; Mrs. Bush, 3. Three cut flowers: Mrs. Rudland, 1; Mrs. Taylor, 2; Mrs. Fraser, 3. WAINGAKE Mrs. G. Hall presided at the July meeting of the Waingake Women's Institute. The roll-call, “A Snowball Story,” caused much amusement. Members held a discussion on how to keep the worker in the country. The competitions resulted: —A Novelty: Mrs. C. O’Connor, 1; Mrs. J. Wykes, 2; Mesdames Gibson and Baty, equal, 3. Multiple bloom: Mrs. White, I; Mesdames E. Rogers, Gibson and Wykes, equal, 2. RUATORIA Ruatoria W.I. members held their June meeting in the Gaiety Theatre. The vice-president, Mrs. Johnston, was in the chair. Mrs. K. D. Henderson presented her report on the annual council meeting in Gisborne. Members were grateful lor her inspiring addiess. Great enthusiasm was shown, over a demonstration of rug-making given by Mrs. Taylor, To Araroa. Competitions resulted: —Eggless cake: Mrs. Hickey, 1; Mrs. Akers, 2. Eggless biscuits: Mrs. Johnston, 1; Mrs. Akers, 2; Mrs. Reardon, 3. Mrs. H. E. Williams presided over the July meeting. Grandmothers were honoured at this meeting, each being presented with a dainty spray. An active and valuable member, Mrs. E. Williams, who is leaving the district, was presented with a spray. Mrs. Henderson entertained the members with old-time popular songs. An interesting letter from the institute’s link in Wales was read by Mrs. Henderson.

The roll-call, “A Humorous Story,” was unusually entertaining. Members listened with appreciation to songs by Mesdames Akers and Olding, and Masters Ashton and Elliot Henderson.

The sales table was very successful at this meeting. The competition resulted: —A child’s knitted garment for CORSO: Mrs. Hickey, 1;- Mrs. Akers. 2; Mrs. Johnston, 3. A demonstration on flax kit-making will be given at 'the August meeting. WAERENGA-A-HIKA

The July meeting of the Waercnga-a-hika institute was held in the Parish Hall. Mrs. Barrow presided. Mrs. Richardson was welcomed back after a long absence. News that Mrs. Bain had left the district to reside in Wairoa was received with regret.

Mrs. E. R. Scott gave an enlightening talk on the work of the Cook Hospital Board and its sub-committees. A competition was won by Mrs. A. Barrow. Other competitions resulted:—Mixed flowers: Mrs. Parr, 1; Mesdames Davies and Cowan, equal, 2; Mrs. Barrow, 4. Eggless biscuits: Mrs. Barow, 1; Mrs. Paulson, 2; Mrs. Carr, 3. Peg bag: Mrs. S. Davies, 1; Mrs. Barrow, 2; Mesdamcs Carr and Paulson, equal, 3. puiia The seventeenth birthday of the Puha institute was held in the Puha Hall with visitors from Ormond and Whatatutu. Mrs. Roach presided. The visitors presented the president and secretary with sprays and boxes of beautiful spring .flowers. A competition was won by Mrs. Atkins. The beautiful birthday cake was made by Mrs. Robinson. Competitions resulted:—Fruit: Mrs. Bailey, 1 and 2. Vegetables: Miss Hollamby. 1 and 2; Mrs. Bailey, 3. TARUHERU Mrs. Kerr presided over a good attendance at the July meeting, held in the Scouts’ Hall, Taruheru. Several visitors and two new members were welcomed. It was decided to form a link with an institute in England and one in Holland. The roll-call, “Butter and sugarsaving hints,” was well responded to.
