TRACTOR FALLS THROUGH BRIDGE
Two men engaged in transferring timber across the access bridge at the St. Leger property, acquired some time ago by the Crown for servicemen’s settlement, had a narrow escape from injury on Thursday when the tractor combination they were driving crashed through the decking and fell into the Hangaroa River, damaging the structure fairly extensively. . The bridge suffered damage at the time of the May tlood, when a heavy machine went through part of the decking but was rescued before the timber gave way altogether. Temporary repairs were made on that occasion, but the bridge did not prove capable of withstanding the weight imposed on it by Thursday’s loading.
