ANTI-COMMUNIST MOVE ALLEGED ;(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 23. A decision to ask the national executive of the Labour Party what bodies have been declared by it to be political organisations was made by the Auckland Labour Representation Committee last night. The committee decided to ask also whether the Women’s Charter Movement and the New Zealand Society for Closer Relations with Russia were so included and, if so, why unofficial information reaching the L.R-C. is that these two bodies have been so classified. The opinion is that it is a further move by certain highly-placed members of the Labour Party in Wellington who have been campaigning with crusading fervour against Communists to freeze out from official membership those claiming allegiance to the two bodies named by the committee. NAVAL COOK GAOLED ;<P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 23. Desmond Walsh, aged 19, a naval cook, who had been found guilty by a jury of rape and indecent assault upon a female and of assaulting the female concerned so as to cause actual bodily harm, appeared for sentence before Mr. Justice Fair in the Supreme Court today. His Honour said that this had been d very disgraceful and brutal assault. In view of the jury’s strong recommendation to mercy, His Honour, said he would impose a sentence of two years' hard labour on the first charge and 12 months’ hard labour, the sentences to be concurrent, on each of the other two.
