FLOOD RELIEF

Sir—A letter in Tuesday’s issue calls for some comment in the light of the correspondent’s remark, “That the public responded immediately.” I have just learned that the total of the list of promises made during the crisis to 2ZM. exceeds by approximately £IOOO the total cash paid in to date. While many people may have overlooked their obligation, one cannot help thinking there were many who took the opportunity to make good fellows of themselves without paying UP I would suggest that the Flood Relief Committee give serious consideration to setting a deadline for payment of promises and then, if space permits, publish a full list of all who failed to honour their promises. “CIVIS”

(When the above letter was referred to Major Elliott for comment, he stated that the great majority of promises received in response to the radio appeal had been fully honoured. This applied particularly to the larger donations. The flood relief committee cannot see its way to following the correspondent’s suggestion regarding the fixing of a dead-line and publication of a list of donations not received up to that time. It believes that all donations were offered in good faith, and that those which have been overlooked will come to hand. If the correspondent’s letter merely gives a reminder to those who have not yet found the opportunity to forward promised donations it will serve a good purpose. Major Elliott states. —Ed. Herald.)
