N.Z. Seaman To Sell 47,000-Dollar House Won in U.S. Raffle
(11.30 a.in.) SAN FRANCISCO, July 22. A Now Zealand seaman, Mr. Roy Reid, who is on the high seas and who won a house and furniture worth 47,000 dollars in a raffle here, has cabled the Bank of America to sell the prizes and credit him with the money.
San Francisco newspapers all an nounce that they are a "little disappointed” that Mr. Reid has no intention of moving into the house, but the San Francisco Chronicle in an editorial praised him l'or his foresight. "Mr. Reid just sat down we gather and said to himself: “Now, what the Sam Hill would I, a sea-going bachelor, be doing with 47,000 dollars worth of quarters and gear in San Francisco?' 'ln the first place, he would have to dig up several years’ pay to hand over to Uncle Sam as income-tax. Then, there would be annual taxes and upkeep, and there are not many seamen who can conveniently pay the overhead on a 47,000 dollar establishment.” The Chronicle adds that Mr. Reid possibly blew a big chance for a dream life. ‘‘He blew it deliberately. We predict a sound future for Seaman Reid.”
