ROAD DEVIATION: HANGAROA BLUFFS DELAY ACCEPTED BY COUNCIL
rjpIIE inability of the Main Highways Board to face up to the construction of the deviation on the inland State highway, via Tiniroto. owing to the cost involved, and the difficulty in securing bridging materials, was communicated to the Cook County Council yesterday n letters from the hoard’s representative on the District Highways Council, Mr. E. W. McEnnis, and from Mr. C. Cr. G. ITarker, M.P.. who forwarded a statement obtained from the [Minister of Works, Mr. R Semple.
The council formally received the letters, on the motion of Mr. M. T. B. Hall, who suggested t'nat the matter should be kept in view. The cost of the deviation, he said, was stated to be about £50,000. He held that the expenditure of this amount on the Hangaroa deviation would be better justified than many of the major expenditures being made in improving existing good sections of the highway. The deviation was of keen concern to the residents of a large area, as well as to through traffic on the State highway. Members noted the undertaking of the Main Highways Board to make every effort to keep the existing road over the Bluffs section in as good condition as possible.
