WOMENS INSTITUTES MANUTUKE Twenty members were present at the July meeting of the Manutuke Women's Institute held in the Manutuke Hall, Mrs. Cox presiding. Mrs. Shackelton displayed some fine hand embroidery. The work was done by the invalid husband of a friend in England and sent in appreciation of the many food parcels received. A letter was read from the Dominion president, Mrs. Barnicoat. Some fine mops were entered in the competition resulting from last month's demonstration. Competition results were:—.Handmade mop: Mrs. C. Greig. Multiple /bloom: Mrs. Hooper. Single bloom: ■Mrs. Nichollas. WHATATUTU Mrs. Gaukrodger presided over a good attendance at tne June meeting. Mrs. Kerr, a new member, was welcomed. "What I Would do with a £5 Note', proved an amusing roll call. Sister Bolton, district nurse, gave a talk on "The Ailments of Children" to an appreciative audience. Results of competitions were: — fApples: Miss Pevreal and Mrs. Pevireal, equal, 1; Mrs. Gaukrodger, 2. Cheese straws: Miss Pevreal, 1. All members joined in tinging "To Each his Own". TOLAGA BAY The June meeting of the Tolaga Bay institute was held in the Parish Hall, Mrs. A. G. Lincoln presiding. Several members expressed their interest in the drama school to be held in Gisborne this month. The president thanked members for their donations of household items which were given to a local family which lost all its possessions when its home was recently destroyed by fire. Mrs. Meikle entertained members with songs while Mesdames Lincoln, Stretch and Brimmer acted a short • comedy.' Visitors from Manutuke, Ormond, and Taruheru institutes spent a pleasant afternoon. Items were given by Mrs. South, Misses S. Dods, and B.| Fisken. Masters Gary Scragg, Horton Stewart and Roger Stewart. The competition, trimming an old hat, caused a lot of amusement. The prettily iced cake was won by Nurse Packson and the mystery parcel by Mrs. Thody. Mrs. J. R. Atkins, the retiring secretary, was presented with an institute spoon. The tea table was decorated with Iceland poppies and roses. Competitions resulted:—Best bloom: Mrs. Jones. 1: Mrs. Ballard, 2 . Vase of mixed flowers: Mrs. A. Ballard, 1; Mrs. D. Peach. 2; Mrs. Jones, 3. MAKARAKA-MATAWHEKO . Mrs. Christiansen presided over a jgood attendance at the July meeting. .Three new members and several visitors were welcomed.. As it was "Grandmothers' Day" •there was a festive air about the programme. Each grandmother was presented with a mystery parcel, with .violets attached. Posies were also sent -to Mesdames Sandlant and Weastall, ■wishing them a speedy recovery from ftheir serious illnesses. Mrs. Woods contributed two vocal golos, while Mrs. B. Wilson and Mrs. Holland presented a brief sketch. Mrs. Barradale gave an interesting talk on her work as a former member of the ptafif at Buckingham Palace. All performers were tendered a hearty vote of thanks. A grocery competition was won by Mrs. Holland. Results of competitions:—Victorian iPosy: Mrs. Livingston, 1; Mrs. Olding, E; Mrs. Parker, 3. WAERENGA-A-HIKA 1 The Waerenga-a-hika Women's Institute meeting was held at Mrs. Carr's thome, Hexton, Mrs. Barrow presiding. jThe meeting opened with a prayer for ©ll nations. The roll call, "Cure for a cold," jbrought a good response. A missing •word competition by Mrs. Robcke was Kvon by Mrs. Davies. Results of competitions were:—Vegetables: Mrs. Barrow. Jacobs presided over a small 'attendance, owing to bad weather and .sickness. The motto for the month was, "Wilding workers work wonders." T. Hutchins. The roll-call, "Something I have read ,and liked," was an interesting one. Members brought tinned goods to be sent to their link in Essex.
