SHARP RISE IN HOME BUILDING COSTS
CANBERRA, July 22. Home building costs throughout Australia rose sharply during the year ended March 31, according to a circular issued by the Department of Works and Housing. The circular shows that increases in the capitals ranged from 14.5 per cent in Melbourne and Hobart to 17.3 per cent in Perth. The increase in Sydney was 15.4 per cent. It is estimated that the Introduction of the 40-hour week caused a 10 per cent increase and that higher award wages were responsible for the remainder.
