BIG FIELDS CARDED FOR AVONDALE SECOND DAY

(Herald Special Service.)

Avondale tomorrow tlie Auckland racing season will conclude with the second day of the Avondale Jockey Club’s winter meeting.

Last Saturday saw a record totalisator turnover, and it looks as if the season will terminate triumphantly. The fields are large, and with the first day ’$ form to go by, the summing-up of the events is interesting. More rain has fallen up north this week, and therefore the going will be holding.

NEW LYNN STEEPLECHASE

. .Hunting Mac will make his debut as a ’chaser—and maybe will be successful too. Last week when running fourth his rider’s saddle {tear broke, which is an excuse for his failure. Duncan is sure to have improved with last Saturday’s race and this time his rider may feel inclined to keep his mount a litle closer to the leaders. Prince Dolomite has not earned any money for some months. King Baffles, second last week was a surprise, but this time he will be at decidedly shorter odds. Oemo is disappointing and so is Uganda. The BettermuskToastmaater bracket and Bold Tide may do best of the others, among whom very little form is noticeable. WAITEMATA HACK HOP.

Tc Paerata just squeezed home a week back and now has 101 b. more to carry so that his job looks difficult. Ray’s I’al is overdue, while Bouquet had every show last week in the running. Lady Blandford, a close second on the opening day, must make a strong appeal now and meets her victory on 61b. better terms for that head defeat. Golden Sliar, who lias little to recommend his chances on, was second to Horonui in a sevenfurlong rae last month at Te Awamutu. Camp Queen failed last welt after being in the first half-dozen half-way through her race. Lightmint's third over 11 furlongs a week back brings him into the limelight. Lola May and Tin Musk are possibilities among the remainder. *BLEBISLGE HURDLES

The Fake, second last week, would need to do a little better, although he might have been ridden last week with a little more patience. Ostentatious won going away a week back and should go close to repealing that peiformance. Gaelic Salute just failed to catch the runner-up in the Windsor Hurdles after making one poor jump. Miss Sterling fell the first day, while Benburb is a possibility on his second a month back at Te Rapa. Flying Attack, on Wellington form, adds interest to this event. Fourth last week when finishing strongly makes Dies Fausfus a place possibility. Superb was a disappointment last Saturday when backed from the right quarter. He may do better after that race. It is hard to see any of the others, on recent form, participating in the finish.

i I :l!||!|;|ji|||liil;Vi!-!!!!lllll!lilliiii!iililllli:iii!i!llllIll!llll!'!lillil!llll» lIIIWIIMIBIIIIIIMHU ★CHURCHILL HANDICAP A big field and an even one has been listed here. SLEEPY FOX was left badly a week ago. However, over 11 furlongs he does not make a strong appeal. COWPER, on his good Trentham form, may be one of the favourite division and last week's winner on the actual running of that race must be considered in the first three again. ASCOT LAD, a newcomer, adds interest to this contest. CONSPIRACY, second to Honora, does not help in solving this problem. DOUBLE CHANCE at B.G should be better served now, although the distance is half a mile further than he ran third in last Saturday. ROBIN LEIGH is not fancied, but the Parliamentary winner RULING MASTER'is for sure. BLACK ACE, left last Saturday, if he gets away with his field this time may be hard to beat. FRONTIER MAC. fourth last week, has some credentials. | EAKLDALE, narrowly defeated in I the Winter Oats by Howe, is further I proof of summing-up this event correctly. FIANA FAIL. BEB (this is the first dav). STAR PERFORMER, and SAFFRON WALDEN cannot be described as not having a chance. This is going to be a good race with so many looking to have first-rate chances. *WHAU STEEPLECHASE SURPEEN, winner of last year's National Steeplechase, and DUMBO, winner of the same event the year before, make this field a little above the ordinary, but of the two the former is the more forward. WHIRLWIND STAR raced below form a week ago, while HAEREA'iU, winner of the Waipa Steeples, comes in with seme form on his side. GOLDEN REIGN wop. impressively a week back, but in hack company; nevertheless, he won well. ETARO is never passed over without giving him a show. DUALIN is not a strong recommendation. ARABES looks a better hope than any of the others as he won at Ellcrslic over country and last Saturday was second in the open hurdles to , Sir Jovial.

PLUNKET HACK HANDICAP

(For 3 and 4-year-olds) Te Tul won so well on the opening day that she may be in demand again, as her bracket, Oklahoma, third a week back, also enters calculations. On Alpenia’s win in the Second Jervois Hack he would have a show although some of his efforts were failures. Our Dink failed last week, but Venio was a fair fourth. Of the others, those that might appeal are Master Arthur, second to Te Tui the first day, Merripay, Val Chase and Vera Lee, but possibly among the others there might be a surprise packet. CHAMPION HACK PLATE Tiercel is not considered to have a as good a chance in this special weight race as Loyal Lu, Broiefort Prince, and Sir Jovial on the same mark. Equator might do better on this occasion than last week and may be a favourite. Redingote ran an impressive fourth last week over a mile, coming from a long way back to do so. Beau Pari was in the money the first day, so enters calculations again, while General March, first past the post but placed second after an inquiry for a slight interference to Broiefort Prince, may make amends. His Luck is not in. Antonio may do the best of those noi already mentioned. ★TELEGRAPH HANDICAP This is the last race in the Auckland metropolitan district for the 194748 racing season and a very fair field it is too. Take-a-Lot, second over the same distance last week, must be seriously thought of, but 9.3 will fully test him. Brockton is good over seven furlongs and although not raced recently will not be overlooked. Bedivere, fourth the first day after a bad run, should do better this time. Silver Lighting may take on the longer race, but if started here will not be at the same price as when ne caught them napping the first day. Pclias, back to his right distance, may be a favourite. Buslany has been olf the scene for some time, but that is not to say he cannot make a bold showing on ground that he likes best. Rozami is better over six. Shirley Fox the first day was ridden into the earth, but, given a breather this time should do better. Fencing, Mooney Valley and Irish Poet (a great track gal loper), appeal more than the others do.
