OVATION GREETS HOWE’S OATS WIN
(Herald Special Service.)
An ovation greeted Howe and W. J. Broughton after the Winter Oats Handicap at Trentham. This was his third success this season, but he had been in minor places on nine occasions. His aggregate in prize money has amounted to £6360, but had he been allotted the first place in the Auckland Cup he would have been the season’s chief money maker and not the gallant little Signal Officei’. In Saturday's Winter Oats, despite the 9.12 handicap, Broughton had his mount handy from the fall of the flag and saved every inch possible in the eight furlongs to score a most popular win. Howe was the favourite on both machines. Earldale ran a better race than expected on his Hastings running and beat all but the winner. The second favourite. Special Flight, ran her best race of the meeting to collect third money. Best For Some Time Merry Robin ran his Jjest race for some time to weight-in ‘fourth. At one stage lie was fairly well hack, but he gradually forged his way towards the leader. The Parliamentary winner, Ruling Master, was very slow in getting into his stride and finished fifth. If started in a longer race on Saturday at Avondale he will be one to keep in mind. Of the others, Tiger Tan did best. He was in the first three early, but after then never looked dangerous.
Wild Note was one of the early leaders, but began to drift when the pressure was applied. From No. l barrier position Citation was always in the call and at one part of the race before entering the straight had hit the front, but at the winning post was last but one. She may do better in the lower class at Greenmeadows. Had Earldale been first instead of second, Auckland would have won the three main flat races at the meeting.
