Black K.O.’s Touhey in Torrid Fight

(P.A.) PALMERSTON N.. July 23. In the most torrid, exciting professional boxing contest seen at Palmerston North for a great many years, Sonny Black, Auckland, 9st., defeated Vern Touhey, Palmerston North, 9st. 41bs„ by a knock-out half-way through the tenth round of a 10-round lightweight bout. Touhey was unconscious for several minutes but was later reported to have recovered satisfactorily. Each round was packed with incident, but at the time of the knockout Touhey must have been slightly ahead on points, having scored consistently with his left. Black was a far more experienced boxer and used the ropes to avoid trouble on many occasions. He dropped Touhey in the tenth round after a series of right swings, followed by a vicious left hook to the jaw.
