BEST HOCKEY SIDE TO LEAVE AUSTRALIA: GAME IN GISBORNE
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 23,The first Australian hockey team to visit New- Zealand since 1,934 arrived from Sydney yesterday by Ilyin;.' boat to begin a tour of four weeks, during which 1-7 matches arc to be played. The team consists of 17 players with Mr. F. H. Levy, Melbourne, as manager. They comprise the first Australian side selected since the 19.38 team. The tour opens with the game against Waikato at Hamilton on Saturday. “This side is considered) the best ever to leave Australia," said Mr Levy, “and if the players can accustom themselves to heavy grounds we are hopeful of a successful tour. “There are nine Queensland players who are used to hard, fast grounds and five West Australians. We have had only two wet-day games this season. However, the side is young with a good sprinkling of experienced men and should play attractive hockey.” The Australians play Bay of Plenty in Whakatnnc on Monday and on Wednesday meet (lie Poverty Bay representatives on the Gisborne ground.
