300 U.N. OBSERVERS TO WATCH TRUCE IN PALESTINE

(’ll 30 a.in.) LONDON, July 21. .Forty-four United States and Belgian officers will leave Rhodes tomorrow for Palestine and the Arab States to observe the new truce. They will be assigned to each of tne armies and the Holy Land key pointsCount Bernadotte's _ headquarters has ordered an investigation into the Arab Government’s complaints of alleged Jewish violation of the cease-fire order. Fighting Continues Ob Syrian Border

LONDON, July 20. Fighting continued today on the Syrian and Lebanese frontiers of Palestine, says the British United Press correspondent at Beirut. The Syrians declared that the Jews were responsible for ignoring the cease-fire. The truce has been observed along the Arab Legion front, says Reuter’s Tel Aviv correspondent. A six-pounder gun is on the roof of a fort at Latrun is reported to have knocked out one of the two Cromwell tanks which the Jews stole when the British were evacuating Haifa.

FUGITIVE BOMBER DETAINED IN AZORES

LISBON, July 20.

The Portuguese authorities at Santa Maria airport detained the privatelyowned Flying Fortress, believed to be bound for Palestine, which left Halifax, Nova Scotia, and flew to the Azpres at the week-end in defiance of the authorities. An Army guard is keeping a number of the passengers aboard the plane. A State Department spokesman said today that, in addition to a United States investigation at Santa Maria airport, in the Azores, an inquiry was also proceeding to determine how_ the plane eluded the officials at Halifax. At Halifax it had been ordered to return to the United States, from where it had been flown to Canada on July 1 without filing a flight plan. A Canadian reporter at Halifax, who had a confidential talk with one passenger before the plane took off, said seven passengers aboard the Flying Fortress expected to be paid 1000 dollars a month by the Haganah forces. The reporter said the passengers showed him two extra petrol tanks concealed in the bomb bay-
