ATTEMPTS TO FORM NEW GOVERNMENT: FRANCE’S PROBLEMS
(N.Z.P.A. —Reuter—Copyright.)
(10.30 a.m.) PARIS, July 21. The President, M. Auriol, has asked M. Andre Marie, Radical Minister of Justice in the outgoing Schuman Cabinet, to form a new Cabinet. M. Marie has accepted. M. Auriol spent all day yesterday seeing party leaders, but late last night nothing was certain except that the task of forming a new Government will be one of extreme difficulty, says The Times correspondent in Paris.
Socialists who participated in the downfall of M. Schuman’s Government are coming in for hard criticism from right-wing and independent newspapers. Many commentators make the point that with the international situation as it is, this was a disastrous moment to cause a crisis without a visible solution. Dispatches from French corresponents in London and Washington all emphasise that foreign opinion is also of the same mind.
