REPAIRS TO ROADS IN WAIKOHU AREA WILL COST £15,425

Flood damage to Waikohu County roads and highways within the county, will, it is estimated, cost

£15,425 to fully repair,

According to figures submitted by the engineer, Mr. S. R. Currie, to yesterday's meetings of the Waikohu County Council, slips on county roads will cost £5050 to remove, while a further £1450 will be expended on moving the slips on the State highways within the county. Culverts and bridges on the State highways will, cost £7OO to renew and £2075 on the county roads. Regrading will cost £470 on the highways and £4OO on the county roads, while metalling costs will total £I2OO on the highways and £3400 on the county roads.

The total cost of placing the State highways back into pre-flood order is estimated to be £3900, and that for the country roads £11,525, a total of £15,425. The roads in the Otipi area have been omitted from this estimate in the meantime. Many Slips Cleared In his report for the month to the council, Mr. Currie stated that slips had been cleared or cut back on many of the roads in the county, while metal had been graded in and watertables cleaned out. Manuka fascines had been put on to several of the roads which nad been metalled. In the Motu riding a temporary span was erected over the wash-out at the bridge on the Moanui road. The engineer recommended, however, that instead of adding a new 20-ft. span, the present span snould be dismantled and a 40ft. span erected in its place. Suitable joists are on the way from Australia.

A good deal of work was done in the Waihuka riding, where manuka fascines and metal had to be put down on several roads. The Poututu road particularly required repeated attention as regards metalling in bad places. The bulldozer is clearing a car track on the Mangahaumia road, in the Mangatu riding, and a track has been made around one subsidence in the old road. The bridge on the Mangamaia road was opened for traffic last Thursday. Some Roads Fascined The big sup on the Whataiutu highway in tne tv'aipaoa riding required constant attention to keep the road open, stated the engineer. The Tarndale road had been cut up badly by traffic-, but me worst places had been fascined and metalled. On the Taumata road, in the Ngatapa riding, slips are being cleared and the river crossing is to be put in order when the river is low enougn. The bulldozer and the grader are cleaning up the Hihiroroa road as far as Sherrill’s. The subsidence on the hill on the Kanakanaia highway is still moving. Metal has been sent up, but more is required. The foundation underneath the temporary span is giving way and it has been found advisable to restrict the leading. A In the Kanaka riding no attempt has been made to drain the water on a section of the Lavcnham road as yet, but the grader is expected to be avail able this week and at least some of the water will be drained.
