LICENSING BILL UNLIKELY TO MAKE EARLY APPEARANCE
(S.R.) WELLINGTON, June 21. The latest indications are that the Licensing Bill is unlikely to make an early appearance in the House, as the Government party has not completed its caucus consideration of some highly controversial aspects.
Meanwhile, the liquor and no- ■ license interests are eagerly awaiting the measure and they have the assurance of the Prime Minister, Mr. P. Fraser, that ample opportunity will be given to the public to make representations on the licensing Bill before the House deals with it. This shows that a special select committee of the House will have to be appointed to take evidence on the new measure. A complete overhaul of the Licensing Act is a formidable task for Parliament which will endeavour to bring up to date the main Act 40 years old together with many subsequent amendments. The Licensing Act, 1908, which is still the principal legislation regarding the manufacture, sale and distribution of alcoholic liquor, contains 305 clauses and 15 schedules.
