RUSSIA’S IMMENSE ARMS PRODUCTION

NEW YORK, May 14,

While the United States is _ outproducing Russia four-to-one in industrial output, Russia is turning out several times the American volume of ar w’eapons, according to Mr. Robert Magidoff. American correspondent who recently returned from Russia. Mr. Magidoff says Russia is sacrificing civilian standards of living in order to increase her capacity to produce munitions. He w T arns that it would be a fatal error to accept Russia’s low living standarcr as indicating a comparatively low war potential. Russia is concentrating on the construction of plants and equipment that will enable her to more than double her production of war weapons by 1960. Referring to Russia’s difficulties, Magidoff says shortages of consumer goods have lowered the morale of the workers. Stifling restrictions and war weariness have prevented Russian labour from regaining its pre-war productivity. Robert Magidoff was recently ordered to leave Russia, where he was accused of being a spy.
