HUNGARY’S TERROR DENOUNCED BY CATHOLIC PRELATE

(N.Z.P.A. Kenter—Copyright.)

(11 a.m.) BUDAPEST, June G, The Primate of Hungary, Cardinal Mlndszenti, instructed the Roman Catholic priests throughout Hungary to read a pastoral letter today condemning the “monstrous moral pressure, falsehood, deceit and terror” which, he said, were never greater.

The Budapest radio stated that Cardinal Mindszenti received a message from the Minister of Education describing as a “serious warning to the church” an incident on June 3 when a crowd of 500 villagers stormed a proCatholic demonstration during which a policeman killed a priest and 25 villagers were arrested. The Minister of the Interior, M. Ortutay, told Cardinal Mindszenti to instruct the Roman Catholic Council of Bishops “to stop all agitation against Hungarian democracy.”
