HARDEST IN YEARS

WAJROA RUGBY CLASH

NARROW MAHIA WIN

(S.R.) WAIROA, June 7, The senior Rugby clash on Saturday in which Mahia beat Nuhaka 9—B was the hardest game seen over a number of years. It was played at a torrid pace and both packs worked extremely hard throughout. Whilst Nuhaka were perhaps unlucky to lose, due to the fact that what appeared to be a certain try was thrown away in the last two minutes, Mahia deserved their win which was well received. The outstanding player on the ground was Ray Stevenson, who led the Mahia pack. "Smuts” Smith, who makes his first appearance for Hawke’s Bay today, was slightly overshadowed by Stevenson, but gave a fine exhibition. Toroa and Symes were the best backs for the winners, whilst Whaanga and Waaka were the best in the losers' rearguard. The defeat of Nuhaka on Saturday makes the senior competition very interesting, Mahia, Nuhaka and Athletic now being level. Athletic and Mahia have yet to meet in the first round.
