GISBORNE TEAMS START WELL

INDOOR BASKETBALL

The second tournament of the Gis borne Indoor Basketball Association for the Kendon and Caughey Cups commenced in the Army Hall on Saturday when spectators were treated to an exhibition of speedy, fast games in which the home teams acquitted themselves well.

Women’s games are for the Caughey Cup, and the men’s sides are contesting the Kendon Cup, both of which trophies were gained last year by Gisborne.

Results to hand follow: Men.—ColtS (Gisborne) 50 d. Whakatane, 9; Bergers (Wellingtor) 27 d. Hawke’s Bay B, 12; Graves (Welling ton) 20 d. Hawke’s Bay A 14; M.1.A., 30 d. Gisborne A, 30. Women. —Kiwis (Wellington) 40 d. Whakatane 5; Hawke's Bay 45 d. Gisborne B, 10; Gisborne A, 28 d. Grey Lynn, 20.

The last-mentioned game, with its victory for the Gisborne team, was an indication of the strength of the local players, as their defeat of Grey Lynn, though by only two points,. marked a voctory over a team which is regarded as first rate and one which has been winning games by 50 and 60 points in Auckland. E.McCallum and N. Mac rae in this team played well, their defence keeping down their opponents score. Two forwards, J._ Carnegie and F. McDonald, also combined well.

The Gisborne Colts team displayed a high standard, too, defeating their op ponents easily. Bergers team, the Wellington combination, revealed an excellent standard, Noel Hayman, the New Zealand representative, provided an insight into some of the finer points of the game. .The match between M.I.A. and Gisborne A, which resulted in a win of six points for the former, was an exceptionally good game for spectators and players and was closely contested throughout. FINALISTS APPEARING With the further playing-off of games in the Gisborne Indoor Basketball Association’s King’s Birthday week-end tournament on Saturday afternoon and this morning finalists in the tourney were coming forward. Early this morning, in the women’s section. Wellington Kiwis, Gisborne A and Hawke’s Bay were undefeated and in the men’s section, Gisborne Colts and M.I.A. and Graves, Wellington, had not been defeated in any games. Further results are: Women.—Rangers (Wellington) 33 d Gisborne B, 3; Grey Lynn 26 d. Kiwis Wellington) 13; Gisborne A 34 d Whakatane 4. Men—Colts (Gisborne) 43 d. Hawke’s Bay A 13; M.I.A. (Gisborne) 35 d. Bergers (Wellington) 31: Graves (Wellington) 28 d. Whakatane 8; Gisborne A 34 d. Hawke’s Bay B 10: M.I.A. (Gisborne) 30 d. Hawke’s Bay B 21.

The last match proved unexpectedly exciting with the Hawke's Bay team showing a complete reversal of its earlier form and giving the strong M.I.A. team a hard tussle for its ninepoint win
