(S.R.) WAIROA, June 5. When the Wellington-Gisborne express stopped at Wairoa on May 21 Constable C. H. Jennings, who was on duty received a complaint from a passenger, Mrs. Ivy Term Sharpe, Melbourne, that her'hand-bag was missing. She bad left it in a carriage when she went for refreshments at Napier and on her return found it had disappeared. With Inspector C. H. Frippard, of the Transport Department, Jennings went to the far side of the train and found an elderly man who on being searched, it was alleged, was found in possesison of a number of articles reported missing and which were previously in the handbag. The bag itself was later found hanging on the front of the engine of the express. This resulted in the appearance in the Wairoa Police Court yesterday of Robert Grant Westoby, aged 73, saddler, a pensioner, Napier, who was charged with the theft of goods valued at £lO 11s, the property of Mrs. Sharpe. At the conclusion of the police evidence, Westoby pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court at Gisborne for trial.
