HAMPSHIRE 195: AUSTRALIA 54 FOR TWO WICKETS

i li.lj a.m.) LONDON, June 2. Hampshire in their first innings igainst the Australians at Southampton scored 195 runs. _ Australia at stumps had lost two wickets foi 54 Rain which made the wicker soft, delayed the start of the match. Hassett won the toss and sent the homeside in to bat.

In reply to a scratchy 195 by Hampshire, the Australians lost two for 54. ir, an hour before stumps. The wicket following the overnight rain was responsive to spin, but played slowly. Hassett. expecting the wicket to become difficult as it dried out, sent Hampshire in but the ball played no tricks.

Hampshire, however, were soon in trouble and at tea had lost 184 for six The Victorian pair. W. Johnston and Tan Johnson were on the spot, particularly the former, who was most dangerous when he lessened his pace and sc-un the ball more.

Brown, opening with Barnes for Australia, was out. for a duck. This followed a run of four centuries and is unlikely to affect his chances of selection in the first test team.

Hassett and Miller played safely until stumps, Plav began late and there was a 15minutes break during the afternoon when a rain squall swept the field.
