OBITUARY
MR. E. T. SEMMENS
Mr. Ernest Trespin Semmens, a well known personality in the farming community of the district, died at the Cook Hospital on Wednesday morning at the age of 67 years. He was born in Cambridge and came to Gisborne when in his ’teens to take up farming. At the age of 25 years he married Miss Lilian Bertha Wheaton in Gisborne and was employed at Taumata station for 40 years.
Retiring six months ago, the couple came to Gisborne to live. Mr. Semmens is survived by his widow, three sons and five daughters. The sons are Messrs. William Semmens, Takapau. John Semmens, Tolaga Bay, and Percy Semmens, Otahuhu, and the daughters Mesdames R. Lyons, Ngatapa, K. Lyons Otahuhu. C. Richardson, Otahuhu, P. Parker, Gisborne and E. Watton, Gisborne. One son died of wounds in the Second World War. There are also 21 grand-children. A service will be held in Cochrane’s Chapel on Friday at 1.45 p.m. and the funeral will take place at the Taruheru cemetery.
The death has occurred at Riverlea, Taranaki, of Mr. James Patrick Murphy, former Mount Cook guide and for 23 years lessee of the Dawson Falls hostel, Mount Egmont. He was 70 years of age. The funeral last week of the late Mr. George Pollock was one of the largest in Dannevirke for many years. Such was the wide popularity of the deceased that friends from all over the province were present to pay their last respects. An exceptionally large representation from the Returned Services’ Association was also present and the funeral procession comprised over 120 cars.
